Medical Records _ Fax Queue

Health Information Specialist

Gastroenterology Consultants of Savannah is dedicated to the highest quality of patient care. The health information management works to gather and process the health information of current and future patients. This position will work closely with other members of staff to include but not limited to the clinical and scheduling departments to ensure each patient receives the highest level of care.


Essential Job Responsibilities

1. Assemble patients’ health information, checking to ensure record is complete, properly identified, signed and that all necessary information is in proper order and accurately labeled and dated.

2. Verifies patient insurance eligibility and benefits prior to the appointment

3. Creates new patient accounts and updates patient demographics in the Practice Management system

4. Release medical records to patients and 3rd party requestors with proper authorization

5. Obtains requested documentation with proper authorization

6. Downloads transcription from providers, make amendments/corrections, and print reports of same

7. Request charts from records facility with proper authorization

8. Converts paper records into electronic format via scanner

9. Manage incoming/outgoing fax queue by accurately processing and disseminating documents received.

10. Answers telephone, screens and directs phone calls

11. Assists patients with the set up and troubleshooting of the practice patient portal

12. Participate and complete annual training for HIPAA, OSHA, and other internal assigned topics


Skills and Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years of medical records experience in a medical practice setting.

Customer service experience preferred

Must have a thorough knowledge of insurance benefits and eligibility

Must have a thorough knowledge of medical terminology.

Must have a thorough knowledge of HIPAA regulations and medical records compliance.

Proficiency in using computer and scanner.

Proficiency in using practice management and electronic medical records software.

Skilled in using third party systems for retrieval of patient health information.

Proficiency in operating multi-line telephone system and call handling.
